Blog EntryProper way of Developing Tourist DestinationsMay 7, '08 10:28 PM
for everyone
There's an interesting article about Caramoan Peninsula at Philippine Daily Inquirer today:

Bicol Governor Villafuerte stated that "Caramoan could be the next Boracay, with a difference: Development projects would be carefully planned so it would not become like the now world-famous resort—“overloaded” and plagued with sewage problems.

Tourism Secretary Durano echoes: “Since nature is the main asset and attraction here, it must be preserved. Everyone must be careful not to overdevelop the place.”

*****

I agree, whenever a place or a tourist destination here in the Philippines becomes popular not only among local tourists but to foreign tourists as well, the Government should closely consider the proper ways of developing it.

Infrastructure development sometimes brings damages to surrounding natural environment. Thus the need for proper guidance and monitoring of structures being built all over the place.

Let Boracay be a lesson in itself, I've never been to Boracay but most people who's been there are telling me that it mostly appeals now to tourists because of its party atmosphere but the overwhelming structures have left the island in grave danger of pollution and being overrun with garbage (lack of proper sewerage system for one).

Tourism brings a tremendous boost to the local economy particularly with the likes of Caramoan. I've been there last month, it's a sleepy fishing town and tourism can really help the local inhabitants of the place, with the help of the Government and the exposure that it will get from the international media, it has a great chance of becoming the next popular tourist destination in the Philippines if not the even the whole of South East Asia.

Thailand's tourism figures is about 14 million a year (contributes about 5% of the Thai economy's GDP), while the Philippines is at about 3 million (in 2007, with most of them Koreans). With proper development and the right plan we can easily be at par or even edge out Thailand.

Westerners are in dire need of a vacation in a tropical destination, third world atmosphere appeals to them like we are to the winter snow of European nations. We can take advantage of this by building resorts and accomodations to a minimum and that caters to a particular theme, more nature friendly structures not just "bara-bara, kahit saan na lang na pag-gawa ng infrastructures".

But of course in a country where one can easily obtain a permit to build and construct, this remains to be a hard task. Developers, the local Government and the National Government should all work with one plan of development to ensure that nature won't be destroyed in exchange for the boost in tourism.

may resort na ba dun?
ung sa Gota Beach ata meron daw mga foldaway cabanas...sa iba wala talaga which is perfect kasi okay naman mg camp and intact pa ren ung surrounding nature...pag nag sulputan kasi ang resorts baka maging Puerto Galera na naging magulo na...

great thing we've been there while it's still semi undiscovered. hopefully for the years to come, ganon pa din itsura niya the way we saw it :) by the way, alam ko madami na ang pupunta don ngayon 'coz yeah it's already advertised and because of the so-called survivor series.

dunno if eto ring ung island na pinagshoshooting ng europe's survivor.

kaylangan talagang ipreserve ung mga ganito kagandang lugar, dapat tutukan talaga to ng gobyerno para hindi mapabayaan

i love bora, been there twice last year lang. march and september kami andun. tahimik naman pag off peak. i love the sand and the locals there.

yun nga lang may mga station na di managed properly.

but ill still go back there. natatahimik ang aking baliw na utak pag andun ako eh.

the beach in boracay looks great (better than even the ones in Thailand, nakita ko sa mga pics) pero un nga kasi problema pag di na control ung mga constructions ng mga resorts magiging magulo, may daanan ng tubo dito, may mga bakod doon, may unfinished resorts dito, may heaps of thrash dito...parang sa puerto galera na konting hakbang mo na lng nasa beach ka na kasi super siksikan na...

dapat may control talaga ang development para di masobrahan... :)

diskriminasyon pa sa bora, if you're in station 2 medyo okay pa, but 3? naku nasayo na lahat ng waste ng island.
last september medyo umuulan, wala sila drainage, punta sa beach ang baha from the hotels. yuk! so, dayo kami sa station one wc is super clean talaga, pati sand napaka puti and finest, pwedeng kang pakaladkad sa mukha ng di ka magagasgas. never tried though. hehehehe.
love ko night life doon and the availability of everything. promise! and people don't mind how you look in a bikini wc is good! hehehehe.

ang hasel lang talaga sa pinas ung transportation eh. super hirap pumunta from one place to another... mas maganda talaga mga sites saten, but if it takes you half a day to get from one place to another, most travelers do get deterred... at least, that's what the european backpackers i met here in KL said about the philippines. in many ways, i agree.

i've seen recent pictures of bora. ang green ng tubig. malumot. yung "lumot" na yun tells alot about the sewage prob in bora. yung "lumot," or the organisms causing the waters in bora's shore to be green, feed on sewage waste a.k.a. human waste.

is this an island? if so, they need to be super strict on who lives there, who builds resorts there, etc. catalina island out here looks nothing close to that but yet, they are really strict about who lives there, who can open businesses, there is even a waiting list for people who want to become residents, there are only 2 hotels that you can stay in, only a few camps where you can go to...etc. that's how they should be with this place.
if they want to preserve it, I think the best idea is to just make some sort of campsite, with clean restrooms, showers, and that's it. Just because there aren't any high class resorts, doesn't mean tourists won't be attracted to come stay. :) I would totally fucking be a hippie and just camp out, pitch my tent and chill by the ocean. :) that's just my take on it. sounds good?

that's a nice idea. because if you let everyone to make their own resorts, as ive said before magiging another Puerto Galera ung place...na magulo talaga...

i don't mind camping as well, you pitch your tent, you don't leave any thrash and you safeguard the natural environment as well...

people should learn to commune with nature. not eat up the whole beach. like galera.

yeah it shouldn't be all about the money all the time. there isn't very much preserved areas these days. i mean they could always hike up the cost of camping per night and have park rangers or something to check some permit or ticket or something. they could make money out of people trashing the damn place or camping illegally, have a fine to pay for disobeying regulations and rules or something, you know. :D teaches people respect and discipline if they ran the place like that. just a thought.
